“What’s wrong with me? Something is worng with me. I was… nice. I’m never nice.” Sherlock muttered to himself a bit bitterly before grabbing John’s gun that he had shoved into the cusions of his armchair and aimed for the wall.

Sophie dropped to the floor as a bullet flew over her head. She pushed the mess of curls out of her face and looked up to see John just as shocked. “Sherlock, I don’t mind if you shoot the wall, it’s not my flat, but please aim the gun away from my head!”

Sophie waved goodbye to Sherlock and opened the door to 221C, setting the keys in a dish and making her way to the kitchen. “Where have you been?” Her mother entered the room in a rush, immediately coming to her daughters side. “I’ve been worried sick. I sent you out over two hours ago!”

“Sorry, Mum.” Sophie said breathlessly, taking things out of paper bags and setting them on the small round table. “I was almost home when I tripped and dropped everything. Had to go back.”

“How’d you pay for it all?”

“I ran into Sherlock Holmes from 221B and he lend me a bit of money.”

“What?” Amy asked, leaning back against the counter. “How much?”

“Just twenty quid.”

“Sophie-”

“I know, I know.” Sophie insisted, shrugging around her mother to the fridge. “I’ll pay him back.”

“Good girl.” She said, grinning and pushing a lock of hair out of her daughters face. She got a glimpse of Sophie’s injured hand as she reached for a can of beans that sat on the counter top and grabbed her wrist, bringing it close.

“I’m fine, Mum! Really. It’s just a little scratch.”

“Oh, come here.” She turned the cold water on and stuck her hand in the sink. Sophie winced and snatched her arm back. Amy sighed. Her expression turned sad. “Soph,” she started. “You know, you don’t have to be the only person taking care of you. That’s what I’m here for.”

“I know, Mum.”

She stared at Sophie with concerned eyes for a long, uncomfortable moment before waving her hand and saying, “Alright.”

Sophie grabbed her jacket and started towards the door. “Wait, where are you going now?”

“Just upstairs. I’ll be back after while.”

She opened the door. “I love you!”

“Love you too.” And at that the conversation was over.

The Darkness

Sophie’s heart pounded as she waited in the silence of 221B. So many things were running through her mind that she couldn’t keep up. Who was J. Moriarty? What did he want with her? Was she safe? More importantly was her mum safe back home? Obviously Sherlock wasn’t going to answer her questions as he wasn’t paying attention to anything outside the sound of his own voice.

Her glance continued to alternate between the clock and the window. It was already dark outside, not that it made a difference. She wouldn’t be able to identify him even if it were day, but something gave her an over-whelming feeling as if he were going to materialize from the darkness. As if he were the darkness.

The words of that one stranger echoed in her mind like a whisper. Sleep with one eye open. He is a nasty, nasty man. This Moriarty is no good, especially when bored. Is this what boredom can drive some to do? Things so terrifying that it sends countless people into a state of panic?

She shook her head. Best not think about that. Hopefully John would be home soon and she wouldn’t feel quite so alone.

Sophie got up and walked to the window, pushing the curtains away and staring out into the darkness as if to say “I’m not afraid. Come and find me.”
